Heraklion City
Heraklion (In Greek: Ηράκλειο, transliterated as Iraklion or Herakleion)
is the largest city in Crete and the capital of the region. 5000 years ago the Minoan civilization flourished there. Heraklion lies along the North Coast of the islands eastern side. To its west you meet the town of Rethymno (at 80km) and at a distance of 135km you come to the city of Chania. On the east side at a distance of 60 km you will find the town of Agios Nikolaos and the town of Sitia (at 130km)
Access to the city of Heraklion
The airport of Heraklion (HER), was named after the great Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis and it is located about 5km east of the city. Heraklion port has daily ferry trips to and from Peireaus Port and many islands on the summer months.
